March 31, 2027 - DSM-5-TR Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders. Live, Interactive Webinar. (This Course is NBCC Approved)

This interactive workshop focuses on the major elements of using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR).  Upon completion of this course, participants will have a greater understanding of the DSM-5-TR and how to use this tool for the objective, evidenced based diagnosing of a client in order to help the clinician in the assessment/placement decision making.  Participants will be able to recognize the difference between use, abuse and dependence that existed in the DSM-IV-TR, and the ability to understand and consistently utilize the new diagnostic criteria of Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders (mild, moderate and severe). Small group exercises will enable participants to utilize critical thinking while helping them to gain inter-rater reliability in making a substance use diagnosis using the DSM-5-TR.

8:30 am – Zoom webinar opens for attendees to enter, workshop begins at 9 a.m.
 
9:00 AM – Differential Diagnosis – (45 Minutes)

1. Understanding the definition of differential diagnosis.
2. Overview and basic understanding of DSM-5-TR decision trees.
3. Differential diagnosis small group exercise.

9:45 AM – History of, and Cultural Considerations using the DSM - (30 Minutes)

1. History of the DSM.
2. Historical controversial changes in the DSM.
3. Current controversies surrounding changes to the DSM-5.
4. Cultural considerations when using the DSM.

10:15 AM – Defining Abnormality as Seen in the DSM  (15 Minutes)

1. Defining abnormal.
2. What constitutes a mental disorder.
3. Reliability and Validity as it relates to everyday use of the DSM-5.

10:30 AM – (15 Minute Morning Break)

10:45 AM – DSM-5-TR and Substance Use Disorders  (30 Minutes)

1. Mild, Moderate and Severe Substance Use Disorders vs. DSM-IV-TR Dependence Definition
2. Changes to qualifiers and remission specifiers.
3. Ambiguities, counselor bias, cultural differences with the criterion.
4. Substance use disorders small group exercise.

11:45 AM – In-Focus: Using the DSM-5-TR with a Medicinal Marijuana Patient – Using Chapter 8 (30 Minutes)

1. Looking at the 3 criterion that could impact a diagnosis with a medicinal marijuana patient.
2. History behind DSM-5-TR not recognizing medicinal marijuana.
3. Large group discussion on how becoming a medicinal marijuana patient while in treatment could impact continuing care.
