The goal of this interactive workshop will discuss the concepts of cultural humility and cultural competence in the counseling profession.  Workshop participants will be introduced into the differences between cultural competence and cultural humility.  Participants will be able to differentiate between the two and be able to identify at least two problems association with the concept of cultural competence.  Participants will learn about the origin of race as it is defined in the United States, and how our conceptions differ from other cultures. Workshop participants will be introduced to four different code of ethics, how they define our need to be culturally competent, and whether they even address cultural humility.  Both large and small group exercises on cultural awareness will occur throughout this workshop.

Cultural Humility and Cultural Competence in Counseling (3 NBCC Clock Hours)

8:30 AM - Webinar Opens at 8:30 a.m. and starts at 9 a.m.


9:00 AM – What qualities should all counselors have (30 min)

  1. From difference to similarities large group discussion on qualities all counselors should possess.
  2. Cultural Competence defined.
  3. Cultural Humility defined.

9:30 AM - (1 hour)

  1. Culture and accepting gifts (large group discussion)
  2. NBCC Code of Ethics on cultural competence.
  3. NAADAC Code of Ethics on cultural competence and cultural humility.
  4. ACA Code of Ethics on cultural competence.
  5. NASW Code of Ethics on cultural competence and cultural humility.
  6. State licensure requirements for cultural competence.

10:30 AM – (15 Minute Morning Break)

10:45 AM – Defining Race in the United States (30 min)

  1. Definitions of culture, ethnicity and race.
  2. History of racial classifications in the US – the US Census.
  3. History of “Hispanic/Latino” racial classification in the US.
  4. Comparative discussion in terms of how other countries define race.
  5. Legal status in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and nationally.

11:15 AM – Cultural Humility, Culturally Responsive Supervision and Organizational Culture (45 min)

  1. Component parts of cultural humility and origins of this perspective.
  2. What took so long for cultural humility to become well known?
  3. Case Study – Using both cultural competence and cultural humility.
  4. Culturally responsive supervision and organizational culture.
  5. Small group exercise: discussion of bias in an organizational setting.

12 PM – Question/Answer Period and discussion on how to obtain certificates of completion

Cancellation/Reimbursement Policy:  Valid requests must be received in writing/email within seven (7) days of course date.  Late requests for the 4 day workshop series can only bring in a substitute attendee
or receive credit for a future workshop date.  All refunds are subject to a $15.00 processing fee.  If paid by credit card, an additional $4.04 fee will be assessed to cover the cost of PayPal processing charges on credit cards.
Refund requests require 2-3 weeks processing time and will be issued as a check as is our policy.
