The goal of this interactive 5-hour workshop provides an introduction to the latest concepts and skills from the 4th edition of Motivational Interviewing (Miller & Rollnick, 2023). Designed for professionals working in behavioral healthcare, this training emphasizes the spirit, core processes, and techniques of MI as a collaborative, person-centered approach to strengthening motivation and commitment to change. Many vignettes will be utilized to practice MI techniques. The spirit of MI4 and the four recursive processes of engaging, focusing, evoking and planning will be fully discussed.

8:30 a.m. - Zoom webinar opens for attendees to enter, workshop begins at 9 a.m.

9:00 a.m. - Introduction to the 4th edition (45 minutes)  

  1. Changes from the 3rd edition to the 4th edition
  2. Defining MI and The Spirit of MI
  3. Methods of MI and MI’s view on resistance
  4. The recursive process of engaging: MI4's view on the importance of the therapeutic alliance and self-disclosure

 9:45 a.m. - The recursive processes of focusing and change models (45 minutes)

  1. Intersection where MI meets Stages of Change
  2. Stages of Change and MI readiness
  3. Self Determination and Health Models of Change
  4. The recursive process, and core aspects of, focusing

10:30 a.m. - 15 Minute Break

 
10:45 – OARS in Practice (75 minutes)

  1. Open-ended questions
  2. Affirmations
  3. Reflections
  4. Distinguishing between simple vs. complex reflections
  5. Summaries
  6. Small group activity for OARS

12:00 – Lunch (1 hour)

1:00 p.m. – The recursive process of evocation: Part 1 (45 minutes)

  1. Recognizing and eliciting DARN-CAT
  2. Discussion of desire, ability, reason and need (DARN)
  3. Discussion of commitment, activation and taking steps (CAT)
  4. Discussion of importance, confidence and readiness

1:45 p.m. – The recursive process of evocation: Part 2 (45 minutes)

  1. Introduction to DARN ruler and ICR ruler
  2. Sustain talk vs. change talk
  3. Sustain talk vs. Discord
  4. Small group exercise assessing DARN using the DARN ruler

2:30 p.m. – 15-minute break

2:45 p.m. – MI4 and Planning

  1. The 7 Core Aspects of Planning
  2. MI Strategies Used in Planning
  3. Large group activity identifying core aspects of planning and corresponding counselor responses

3 p.m. – End of workshop, certificate of completion discussion

Cancellation/Reimbursement Policy:  Valid requests must be received in writing/email within seven (7) days of course date.  Late requests for the 4 day workshop series can only bring in a substitute attendee or receive credit for a future workshop date.  All refunds are subject to a $15.00 processing fee.  If paid by credit card, an additional $4.04 fee will be assessed to cover the cost of PayPal processing charges on credit cards.Refund requests require 2-3 weeks processing time and will be issued as a check as is our policy.
